To start, you’ll need some plain white plates (or mugs or bowls or whatever you want to paint). Make sure that they are oven safe as we need to bake the paint once it’s on.
I picked up these square plates that are in fact salad plates. But they were cheap and I like the shape!
Before you start painting, wipe down the plates with alcohol. This ensures the paint will adhere correctly.
If you want to be able to eat off these plates, then you will need to use an appropriate food-safe paint. The paint I used is not food-safe but is dishwasher safe. I only plan on serving cookies (probably on napkins or doilies) on the plates so I was happy to go ahead and use the paint I already had.
You don’t need any artistic ability whatsoever for these. Just grab a flat paintbrush and alternate brushstrokes around the plate. I chose fuchsia pink and a paler baby pink paint colors as they are perfect Valentine colors.
You could switch up the colors for any other time of the year too. Think navy blue and turquoise or dark green and bright yellow. Endless possibilities!
Don’t be afraid to get creative. I added a little XO on one of the plates. You could draw some hearts or even use a stencil and get fancy!
Once the plate has been painted, let dry for 48 hours before curing in the oven (follow the directions on your plate).
Wouldn’t a matching set of mugs or wine glasses look cute?
